President, Penn Students of AMF
Posted on: Monday, November 03, 2008
I have worked with several other students to start up the Penn Students of AMF Support Network, which includes a 1) peer-led Support Group for students who are coping with the illness or death of a loved one to get together to talk with others "who understand," 2) a Service Group open to all students to go to service events together throughout the Philly area, and 3) opportunities for faculty members to serve as mentors to support group members. Due to the unfortunate need for grief support for college students, we have grown into a national organization, National Students of AMF, with chapters on 24 campuses across the country. For a 2 minute story about the organization, please check out http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/18424808#24213663 or go to http://www.studentsofamf.org We are holding a kickoff/informational meeting (open to all students interested in learning more about any aspect of the organization) Wednesday, November 5th at 8pm in Houston Hall. Feel free to call (919-810-0453) or email me (davidfa@mail.med.upenn.edu) with any questions.

Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History
Posted on: Friday, October 24, 2008
Tues 10/28/2008 6 pm Penn Bookstore Penn Faculty member Heather Love joins us to discuss and sign copies of her book “Feeling Backward: Loss and the Politics of Queer History.” Love weighs the costs of the contemporary move to the mainstream in lesbian and gay culture. While the widening tolerance for same-sex marriage and for gay-themed media brings clear benefits, gay assimilation entails other losses - losses that have been hard to identify or mourn - since many aspects of historical gay culture are so closely associated with the pain and shame of the closet. Feeling Backward makes an effort to value aspects of historical gay experience that now threaten to disappear, branded as embarrassing evidence of the bad old days before Stonewall. It looks at early-twentieth-century queer novels often dismissed as “too depressing” and asks how we might value and reclaim the dark feelings that they represent. Dr. Love argues that instead of moving on, we need to look backward and consider how this history continues to affect us in the present.

If you have not already made an order for College Day materials, please contact me with the quantity that you need by Tuesday, September 9th.

Constitution Day:
The National Constitution Center is participating in College Day; asking students to visit on this free day can be used to meet the federal Constitution Day mandate.  The National Constitution Center plans on running its Constitution Day exhibit on the 27th.  If you have any questions about this, I am happy to answer them.  You may also contact the National Constitution Center at:

Operation Theft Awareness
Posted on: Sunday, February 17, 2008
Did You Know that theft comprises 81% of the total crime reported within the Penn Patrol Zone?

Did you know that 70% of non-retail thefts are attributed to unattended or improperly secured items?

Theft: More Than Just Personal Property
Serious consequences are associated with theft of personal items. Besides the loss of personal property, theft is also inconvenient and may result in the loss of things that are of substantial emotional and professional significance.

Unattended and improperly secured items put you at greater risk of theft, which can result in:
  • Identify theft
  • Loss of irreplaceable photos
  • Loss of all of your phone contact numbers
  • Loss of important work, such as a thesis or research analysis
Embrace the idea that ‘Safety & Security is a Shared Responsibility’ and take the following simple, yet important, steps to keep your personal items safe:
  • Locking your doors
  • Keeping your laptop with you at all times
  • Securing your bike with a U-Lock
  • Removing personal items from vehicles that are in plain view
  • Report Suspicious Activity to Penn Police by calling 215-573-3333 or 511 from any campus phone
